uPVC Case Study: Sliding Sash uPVC Window Installation in Craigholm

Client: W. Haldane

Client Requirements

The owners of a traditional sandstone property in Craigholm, Kilmacolm, Inverclyde, approached us with a request to replace their existing 14 sliding sash timber windows. Their primary concerns were finding an alternative that required minimal maintenance, improved energy efficiency, and retained the authentic look of traditional timber windows.

Our Proposal

To meet the client’s needs, we recommended our German engineered VEKA system, a high quality double glazed uPVC window solution. This system accommodates a 28mm sealed unit filled with Argon gas and coated with Low-E technology to enhance thermal efficiency and reduce heat loss.

To ensure the new windows retained the property’s period charm, the client opted for several bespoke features, including:
      • Timber-weld joints for an authentic finish
      • White woodgrain exterior with smooth white interior
      • Deep bottom rail
      • Clip-on sash horns
      • Gold hardware to complement the classic aesthetic

Additionally, the home featured period timber mouldings on the interior, which the client wished to preserve. This required careful planning and execution to ensure that the existing interior finishes remained intact during the installation process.

Installation Process

The project involved the removal of the existing box sash windows, a delicate task that required meticulous handling of the original mouldings. Our team carefully extracted the old frames, ensuring the mouldings were undamaged so they could be reinstalled seamlessly once the new frames were in place.

Box sash removals allowed us to:
      • Maintain slim sightlines for a more traditional look
      • Insulate behind the sash boxes for enhanced thermal efficiency
      • Add strong structural supports for long-lasting durability

Project Outcome

The installation was successfully completed over four days, with outstanding results:

      • Delighted Customers: The clients were thrilled with the transformation, noting a significant improvement in heat retention and energy efficiency.
      • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: The combination of double glazing, Argon gas, and Low-E coating contributed to a warmer, more efficient home.
      • Aesthetic Appeal: The new windows perfectly replicated the look of traditional timber sash windows while offering a modern, maintenance-free uPVC alternative.
