Heritage Window & Door Renovation Case Study: Isle of Eriska Hotel, Scotland
Client: Eriska Hotel
Project Overview
PT Glazing was commissioned to manufacture, supply, and install a complete package of high-performance windows and doors as part of an ongoing refurbishment at the prestigious Isle of Eriska Hotel — a luxury private island retreat off the west coast of Scotland.
Renowned for its warm hospitality, heritage charm, and breathtaking coastal surroundings, the hotel continues to invest in sympathetic upgrades that enhance guest comfort while preserving its historic character. Our role was to deliver premium glazing solutions that met modern efficiency and safety standards while complementing the hotel’s traditional aesthetic.
Project Scope
Working closely with the hotel’s renovation team, PT Glazing delivered a full supply and installation service across multiple areas of the property. All products were manufactured to bespoke specifications and installed with minimal disruption to the hotel’s day-to-day operations and guest experience.
Installation included:
All sliding sash windows, French doors, and the main entrance door were finished in white woodgrain internally and externally, complete with traditional astragal bars to maintain the building’s classic appearance.
Design and Heritage Considerations
The Isle of Eriska Hotel blends Victorian elegance with modern luxury, so it was essential that all new glazing maintained the traditional character of the property while significantly improving thermal performance and security.
Our team specified systems that:
- Preserved the traditional sash window appearance
- Enhanced energy efficiency throughout the property
- Improved guest comfort in all seasons
- Met modern safety and durability standards
- Complemented the hotel’s heritage architecture
The result was a seamless integration of modern glazing performance within a historically sympathetic design.
Sliding Sash Window Installation
Nineteen German-engineered sliding sash windows were installed throughout the hotel. These systems were selected for their exceptional build quality, smooth operation, and authentic traditional styling.
Key features:
- Classic vertical sliding sash design
- White woodgrain finish inside and out
- Decorative astragal bars for a heritage look
- Gold hardware throughout for a premium finish
- Gold cam locks, sash lifts, and pole eyes
- Travel restrictors fitted to all windows for added safety
- Highest efficiency toughened glazing units
These windows retain the visual charm of traditional timber sash windows while delivering the durability and performance benefits of modern engineering.
Velux Roof Windows
Fourteen high-efficiency roof windows were installed to enhance natural light and ventilation throughout key areas of the hotel.
Finished internally in white painted pine, these roof windows provide:
- Excellent thermal efficiency and insulation
- Increased natural daylight
- Improved ventilation and comfort
- Long-term durability and weather resistance
The addition of these roof windows has helped brighten interior spaces while contributing to the building’s overall energy performance.
Entrance & French Doors
A new main entrance door and two French doors were installed to complement the upgraded windows and maintain consistency across the property.
Manufactured with the same white woodgrain finish and astragal bar detailing, these doors combine traditional styling with modern performance. All doors were fitted with high-efficiency toughened glazing and premium gold hardware to match the sash windows.
The result is a cohesive, elegant appearance across all elevations of the hotel.
Energy Efficiency & Performance
Improving thermal efficiency was a key objective of the refurbishment. All glazing installed featured high-performance, energy-efficient units designed to achieve excellent U-values and reduce heat loss throughout the building.
Benefits include:
- Improved insulation and reduced draughts
- Enhanced guest comfort year-round
- Lower energy consumption
- Increased durability and longevity
The upgraded systems now provide modern performance standards while maintaining the charm expected of a luxury heritage destination.
Safety and Security
Safety was a priority across all installations. All windows were fitted with travel restrictors where required, while toughened safety glass was used throughout. High-quality locking mechanisms and robust construction ensure both guest safety and long-term reliability.
