Transformation of a Traditional Sandstone Property:
Energy-Efficient uPVC Sliding Sash Windows in Dumbarton

Client: A. Logan

Background

PT Glazing successfully executed a remarkable project in Dumbarton, focusing on enhancing energy efficiency in an old traditional sandstone building. The challenge was to provide the client with uPVC Windows that not only met energy efficiency standards but also replicated the appearance of the existing timber windows, all while complying with conservation laws and architectural plans due to the location being within a conservation area.

Client's Concerns

• The client desired energy-efficient windows to replace the draughty timber windows.
• Preservation of the building’s traditional look and character.
• Adherence to conservation laws and architectural plans.

Solution

PT Glazing proposed the use of uPVC Sliding Sash Windows, carefully designed to imitate the look of traditional timber windows. The features included, Mechanical joints, Run-through sash horns, White woodgrain effect inside and out, Astragal bars, Deep bottom rail & Traditional style hardware.

These features allowed the client to enjoy the benefits of energy efficiency and low maintenance, while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of traditional timber windows.

Installation Process

Due to uPVC’s broader frame compared to timber, the installation process played a pivotal role. We meticulously removed the traditional sash box along with the outdated weights and pulleys. In their place, we installed tanalised timber for robust support, ensuring longevity. To enhance insulation, we strategically placed insulation material behind the boxes.

Preserving the slim sightlines reminiscent of the old timber windows, we positioned the frame behind the stone mullions/reveals. The final touches included a beautiful Pine finish on all windows, painted in a crisp white hue. To infuse a touch of tradition, we incorporated a routed groove on the internal cill. The result is a seamless blend of modern durability with the charm of classic aesthetics.

Additional Window Replacements

Four smaller windows on the first floor replaced with Reversible Windows for ease of cleaning and a flush look. The Reversible Windows were in white woodgrain finish with gold connoisseur handles.

uPVC Door Replacement

A uPVC Door on the first floor, leading to the balcony, was replaced to address draught issues. The door featured a white woodgrain finish, gold hardware, and Ultion locks with X3-star British standard locks for security.

Results

Delighted Customers: The clients were thrilled with the transformation, noticing a significant improvement in heat retention.
Architectural Approval: Even the customer’s architect friend was amazed at the windows’ resemblance to timber and the overall final result.
Energy Efficiency: The project successfully enhanced the energy efficiency of the property.
Security Measures: The addition of Ultion locks and three-star British standard locks provided an extra layer of security.

Conclusion

This project showcased PT Glazing’s expertise in balancing energy efficiency, aesthetics, and compliance with conservation laws. The successful replacement of traditional timber windows with uPVC Sliding Sash Windows not only met the client’s expectations but exceeded them, providing a blend of modern functionality with traditional charm. PT Glazing once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence and client satisfaction.
