Background

PT Glazing was enlisted by a prominent building company to bring their expertise in aluminium window installations to a prestigious project involving the renovation and construction of four luxury family homes in the Trinity/Newhaven area of Edinburgh. The location, Dunforth Gardens, is a Category C(S) Listed property situated within the Edinburgh World Heritage Site and New Town Conservation Area. The site boasts stunning views over Newhaven and the Firth of Forth to the north.

Project Scope

The project involved the installation of high-quality aluminium windows for two new builds and the renovation of two existing homes within Dunforth Gardens. PT Glazing’s role was crucial due to the specialized requirements of aluminium window installations.

Architectural Challenges

Dunforth House, originally built by Henry Robb, a Leith ship builder circa 1860, presented unique challenges due to its historical significance and location within a conservation area. The property, initially donated to the Church of Scotland, had served various purposes, including being a children’s home until 2005.

Technical Specifications

Window Types: The glazing work comprised Aluminium Curtain Walling, Aluminium Casement, Tilt and Turn Windows, and Aluminium Bifold Doors.
Colour Palette: A stylish RAL7001S – Silver grey (Satin) was chosen to complement the zinc cladding on the building achieving a harmonious blend of contemporary and traditional aesthetics.
Customisation: Two windows were powder-coated in white to match the front elevation timber windows, showcasing attention to detail.
Finish Quality: All aluminium items had a marine-grade finish, accompanied by a 25-year powder coating guarantee.
Security Standards: All items were PAS24 accredited, ensuring high-level security for the luxury homes.
Hardware Matching: Window handles were colour-matched to the frame, while bifold door hardware was black, aligning with gasket lines and hinges.
Functionality: Bifold Doors provided ample clearance when fully open, with a main traffic door option for use as an entrance door.

Glass Specifications

Energy Efficiency: High-performance energy-efficient glass was installed to meet required U-values.
Safety Standards: Laminated and toughened glass was used as standard to meet project specifications.
